Weight issues are often treated as if they only affect women, with much of the healthy eating advertising being aimed at this group. However, the Public Health statistics tell us a different story, with more men than women being in the unhealthy weight percentile. Indeed, it is predicted that this gap will grow, so that by 2050 the prevalence of obesity will affect 60% of adult men and 50% of adult women (Public Health UK 2013).
However, if you visit a weight loss group you are likely to find it heavily over subscribed by women, with very few men present. Men are also less likely to be questioned about weight by their GP and so not triggered to take action. So what happens to overweight men? While advertisers and the media are starting to target men in the same way as women about their physical shape, men do not seem to take up support in the same way that women do. This may be because they prefer to deal with the issues alone, however, this is often hard to do and appropriate support can make the difference between success and staying stuck in the unhealthy pattern.
At LCC we understand the particular difficulties of men who struggle with weight, and offer an holistic approach to the issue to help you make the changes that will improve your weight and lifestyle.
