Sad young woman

Most of us experience anxiety at some time in our life because it is a normal human emotion. If we have an interview, or presentation to do we may suffer from “nerves” An anxiety disorder is more than this and people who suffer from one of these disorders often find that it interferes with their ability to lead a normal life. For some sufferers, this can be an overwhelming experience and traumatic.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

  • Panic Disorder: People with this condition have feelings of terror that strikes suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. The person may feel chest pain, palpitations and shortness of breath all of which can be a frightening experience for the person as they mimic physical illness.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): People with OCD have constant intrusive thoughts (obsessions) or fears that may cause them to perform certain rituals or routines (compulsions).
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a condition that can develop following a traumatic event, such as car crash when the person is left with heightened anxiety.
  • Social anxiety disorder: Social anxiety disorder involves worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations.
  • Specific phobias: A specific phobia is an intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as spiders or using tube trains. The level of fear is normally inappropriate to the situation and may cause the person to avoid common, everyday situations.
  • Generalized anxiety disorder: This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety.

These disorders can have a profound effect on the sufferer’s life. At LCC we have specialist Counsellors who can help you to control the symptoms and regain your life.
